We have really enjoyed visiting the tiny, historic town of New Market, Virginia located in the heart of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Everybody is very friendly and the surrounding countryside is captivating. During the Civil War, given the town's strategic location, New Market played an active role, as Stonewall Jackson’s troops marched through the town on four separate occasions. On May 15, 1864, the historically significant Battle of New Market took place in which teenage cadets of the Virginia Military Institute fought. You'll see a monument to the cadets that died during the engagement.
